Course Objective

This course is designed to introduce the effects of technology and innovation on Financial Services to better understand the future of Financial Services Industry.

The course focuses on the technological advancements, innovative trends and startups that are shaping the Financial Services Industry. It also introduces both the technologies and the firms (both startups and big corporations) that are using these technologies for innovative solutions.

This course has five pillars: Technology as the enabler; Society as the demand; Economic conditions as the driver; Regulations as the rule changer. The last pillar, Strategy, will be placed upon those four pillars as a Business Model for Financial Services Institutions.

At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the strategy of FinTech Startups, Banks, and Governments.

Course Description

The course introduces both the technologies and the firms (both startups and big tech companies) that are using these technologies for innovative solutions. The following topics are covered:

  • The Effects of Financial Technologies on Innovation and New Business Model Creation
  • The Opportunities and Threats of Financial Technologies
  • The FinTech Ecosystem
  • Technological Trends and Use Cases
  • Blockchain Technology
  • FinTech Regulations
  • Open Banking and API Economy
  • FinTech Startups and New Business Models for Banking
  • The Strategic Partnership Models Between Corporations and Startups

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Recognize the technological change and digitalization in the Financial Services Industry,
  2. Understand the effects of technology and innovation on finance,
  3. Describe the opportunities and threats of financial technologies,
  4. Analyze the FinTech Ecosystem,
  5. Explain the technological trends that affect financial services,
  6. Identify the effects of Open banking and the API Economy,
  7. Discuss the effects of regulations,
  8. Analyze the FinTech startups and their business models,
  9. Interpret the strategic partnership models between corporations and startups.

Instructional Design

The course will be taught as a lecture. You will have some course materials such as books, articles and case studies which will be delivered before the class.

Assignments will be delivered at least one week before the class. Students are requested to complete their assignments and prepare a short note for discussions before coming to class.

Active participation and in-class discussions are highly encouraged based on the assignments.

Some guest speakers could be invited upon their availability.

Course Requirements and Expectations

Class attendance and active oral participation are important requirements for completing the course. Each student is expected to contribute to class discussion every class, as part of the learning experience for all students.

Read all assigned materials before class and be prepared to discuss.  Students are responsible for timely completion of reading assignments prior to each class. To effectively participate in class discussions you should be able to frame and explore problems and situations in various ways, generate problem-solving alternatives, actively listen, build-upon, and challenge the ideas of others.

Written assignments will be the original work of the individual student. Students must indicate where any and all materials are taken from other sources (footnotes, bibliography). Use reputable and authoritative sources.
